We all should be drinking 8-10 cups of water a day,... and fruit juice, soda or coffee doesn’t count. If it’s a hot day and you’re outside, or you are vigorously exercising, bump it up another 50%! The problem is accurately keeping track of how many glasses we have drank without using an app. I have found in the evening if my voice is hoarse or my skin feels dry, I know I am woefully behind my 8-10 cups of water consumption.
When the body is dehydrated your entire system is dehydrated. Ever noticed the leaves on a plant when it’s thirsty? They are wilted. My cactus actually shrivels up. Our system do the same. Try gettting a blood draw when you’re dehydrated, the phlebotomist will not be able to find your vein. Our skin dries, our brain shrivels, kidney stones can form and bacteria can build up causing UTIs. Dehydration can affect blood pressure and brain fog as well as make you believe you are hungry when you’re actually thirsty, so drink up! What is my simple app-free method? First of all, it’s a 2 cup capacity - 5 bottles seems more attainable than 10 cups, and it doesn’t sweat so I don’t have to worry about it when I have it in my tote next to my iPad. Second, they come in all kinds of great designs! In the morning I put five rubber bands at the top, as I empty the S’well I slip a band down to the bottom of the bottle and refill the bottle. Each time I drain the bottle I slip another band down to the bottom. At a glance I can see how I’m doing during the day. The last thing I want is to try playing catch up at night, as I’ll be up every couple of hours and interrupting my sleep. Goal: Have every band at the base before bedtime - if not by 7PM! Moving from seated to standing is quite simple when you use a laptop, not so with a desktop - but I tried anyways! My very temporary structures for my monitor, keyboard and mouse balancing on shipping boxes and hymnals were problematic, but it sure felt good to stand tall, tighten my core and stretch out my hip flexors while continuing to work; and know I was incorporating NEAT movement.

YEARS ago I used to say the beauty of my daughter was that she had such an eye for detail, she would pause and get totally absorbed in the wonder of whatever she was looking at. She was totally focused on the here and now, studying the patterns on a leaf, or mixing paints on her palette - at that moment. When I began my new P/T job I found this book “Meditations for Women Who Do Too Much” sitting on my desk. Each morning when I get to Christ Lutheran Church, I try to read that day’s reading. Yesterday’s reading made me realize one of the reasons I love my new job. For those four to six hours I only think about that job. I am learning something new so I have to be focused! I don’t check personal emails, Facebook posts, texts (which is simply other people trying to control your time)... I can’t change a load of laundry, or worry about whether there are enough speakers for the Cohasset Rotary Club for the next month. I simply focus on the project I am working on that hour. It works. Even though I’ve added a 20 hour a week job to my already busy schedule I feel I’m more relaxed. I’m not focusing on the past, present and future of all the balls in the air because I’m only focusing on that one ball and doing my best at that job at the moment. I am still doing my two other jobs, advocating and educating with Beautycounter and Integrated Nutrition Health Coaching, I’m just more effective at them in a shorter period of time. I used to believe I was excellent at multi-tasking. OK, I found I’m not! As I tell my son, don’t be obsessed on making that sales goal at the end of the month because you won’t be your best at what you’re doing now. Simply be the best you can be for the client you are working with at that moment. The rest will fall into place. Single Focus (practicing presence) = less stress = lower blood sugar/lower blood pressure = better health/more effective. When I grew up life after school was simply "Go outside and play, and be home for dinner." There are SO many health benefits to simply going outside besides the obvious natural exercise. You are exposed to Vitamin D from the sunlight on your bare skin, and getting dirty exposes your microbiome to critical beneficial bacteria for your gut. Creative play and socialization with friends is extremely important for the developing mind, planning skills and discovering the art of negotiation. Socialization is a critical key to happiness. Spending time with others whether it's playing in the sandbox at two, enjoying a cup of coffee with a friend or rocking on the front porch at 90, is the key to longevity. I remember climbing pine trees with my next door neighbor many, many days when I was in elementary school. We would shinny up these pines that weren't that big, maybe six inches diameter, and climb way up until the tree swayed in the light breeze,... bracing ourselves on a branch, hooking an arm around the trunk, laughing and talking. An hour later we would scramble down, run around a little and climb two more trees. Yes, we might come home scratched, dirty, sticky with pitch and bruised - but it was all good!
Have discussions with your children's caretakers and their friend's parents and express your preference for active play instead of hours of screen time. Allow your children to figure out creative play themselves. Send them outdoors, even if it's mud season, and let them get sweaty and dirty. And think about joining them! Shoot hoops for 15 minutes with your kids, start planning and dig a vegetable garden,... keep the television off, turn the music on and you may find yourself dancing while you cook or clean!
